Weekend Reads & Mushy Koala Photo

There were a lot of great articles from blogosphere this week, so time to share a few that demonstrated some out of the norm newsworthiness or personal milestone achievements that deserve a second look.

The photo to the right is “Sam”, the female koala that escaped the seemingly neverending stories of fires that ravaged Australia last week.  I’ve seen a few koalas in zoos around the U.S., but never would I have imagined a wild animal drinking from a human hand in this manner.  Yes, it’s mushy but it’s a great photo!

The Consumerist posted an awesome story this week displaying the true power of the Internet, and more importantly, what happens when you ask for help from a blog frequented by savvy people who hate being screwed over.  A reader had lost an iPhone, only to find the person who recovered it was taking pictures of himself and posting them on the net.  Within 1 hour, the person was identified, contacted and agreed to return the phone the next day.  There were some pictures of the guy posing with his new toy, but they were taken down once he returned the merchandise.  Note to self – if you find lost merchandise that you want to claim as a freebie, don’t document yourself using it and upload it to the web for all the world to see.

The Consumer Reports Health blog tells us that 40% of people with diabetes aren’t aware they actually have the disease.  This generally occurs because Type II diabetes is a disease that afflicts obese or sedentary individuals later in life.  If you have a family history of diabetes, or begin to experience the warning signs of diabetes — always thirsty, extreme malaise, excessive urination, always feeling tired — get yourself checked out.  The diagnostic test only requires 5 minutes of your time, and a few milliliters of your blood.  Since this is an investment blog, I’ve long said one of the best long term investments that you can make is by investing in drug companies that supply insulin, which will be in greater demand since the obesity epidemic will only get worse in the years to come.

Pat from The Smart Passive Income Blog made a great point that failures are often the best way to succeed.  I’ve always said that I learned more from making a well thought out mistake than a dumb luck correct answer.  Why?  Since I’m a Type A personality and a wannabe know-it-all, I want to know why I screwed up so I won’t make the same mistake again.

Mr. TML from the Tough Money Love blog shared some great news saying he recently paid off his mortgage on his vacation home.  He’s taken some heat lately because all of the Generation X bloggers are PO’d since the baby boomers (his age demographic) are saddling us with all this national debt, but he’s clearly not the target of our snide comments.  Nice work, and thanks for showing us Gen-X’ers how it’s done!
